An abstract definition feels slippery. But when you tie a concept to a concrete image, understanding clicks. That is not a coincidence. Cognitive science has documented this for decades. The concreteness effect is real, and it is large.

What the Concreteness Effect Actually Is

The core finding is simple: people remember concrete,感知able information better than abstract information. When two concepts are presented side by side, one described in abstract terms and one illustrated with a specific example, you will learn and retain the concrete one faster.

Sadoski and Goetz (1985), writing in Review of Educational Research, published a meta-analysis showing that concrete texts produce deeper comprehension and better retention than abstract texts. This is not a small effect. It holds across subjects, from history to chemistry, from law to psychology.

Why the Brain Prefers Concrete Things

This comes down to cognitive load. Abstract concepts require more mental effort to construct meaning. You have to build a structure out of nothing. But when you encounter a concrete example — something real, tangible, imaginable — your brain already has building materials.

Dahl and Shall (2016) pointed to a key mechanism: concrete words automatically activate sensory and motor regions. When you hear the word "apple," your brain engages visual and motor cortex. When you hear "ethical dilemma"? That is purely linguistic processing. You have to expend more attention to make it meaningful.

For students, this translates directly into learning efficiency. When you encounter concrete examples while learning new material, it produces faster initial comprehension and longer memory retention. Marcus and Winter (2023) ran recent EEG studies showing that concrete words produce stronger activation patterns in the right temporal lobe, suggesting deeper sensory processing.

How Textbooks Use This Effect (Poorly)

Most textbooks are abstract by design. They define principles, then maybe offer an example. But that example is usually tacked on after the fact rather than used to build understanding.

Smart students flip this order. They look for concrete examples first, then return to the definition. When you can pair an abstract concept with a concrete mental image, you have a more stable memory structure.

Take learning "opportunity cost." If you just memorize the definition, you might struggle to recall it during an exam. But if you concretize it as: "this is like choosing to watch Netflix instead of going to the gym — you lose the benefit of exercise but gain rest and entertainment," that concrete scenario anchors it.

When Abstract Still Has Value

Here is a caveat. Do not abandon abstraction entirely.

While the concreteness effect is strong, Hadlow and Dunning (2018) showed that once learners already have a solid understanding of a domain, abstract generalizations actually improve transfer. After you have built a library of concrete examples, you can start extracting higher-order principles and applying them to new situations.

So the sequence matters. Concrete first. Once you have enough examples, then abstract.

How to Apply This Today

When you encounter a new concept, do not just read the definition:

  1. Find a concrete example — a real scenario, a person, a picture you can see in your mind.
  2. If you cannot find an existing example, create one. Do not wait for the textbook. Ask yourself: what would this principle look like in real life?
  3. Pair concrete examples with abstract definitions. In your notes, write the definition, then add a concrete example below.
  4. During exams, recall the concrete example. If you can remember the concrete scenario, you can usually reverse-engineer the abstract principle.

Marcus (2022) in the Journal of Educational Psychology tested a version of this as an active learning intervention. Students were asked to generate an original concrete example for each new concept. Those students performed significantly better than those who simply reread definitions, with higher retention at a one-week interval.

When the Effect Breaks Down

The concreteness effect is not foolproof. Some concepts are inherently abstract without good concrete examples. Philosophy and higher mathematics have areas like this.

In those cases, two paths. One is analogies — compare the abstract concept to a more concrete domain. Even if the analogy itself is abstract, the comparative structure carries some of the concreteness benefit. The other is accepting you will need more repetition to build memory traces for abstract concepts.

The Real Issue

Most students accept abstract definitions and try to memorize them through repetition. Their brains are not designed for that.

The concreteness effect tells us the entry point to understanding is through concrete examples. If you are learning something and it keeps slipping away, ask yourself: do I have a concrete picture, a concrete scenario, a real situation I can imagine?
